Emery is a little mermaid. She is brave, but also shy. She likes to whisper.
Today, Emery visits an Amusement Park by the sea. The music goes tum-tum. Lights go blink-blink. Emery swishes her tail in a small pool near the gate.
An Adventurer walks up. He has a big hat and a kind smile.
“Hello,” he says.
Emery peeks up. “Hi,” she whispers.
They hear a tiny cry. “Eep! Eep!”
It comes from a Toy on a bench. A wind-up Toy, with a shiny key on its back.
The Toy wiggles. The key is bent.
“Oh no,” says the Adventurer. “The Toy is stuck.”
Emery frowns. She feels empathy in her belly. “We help,” she says.
The Toy squeaks, “No help! Mine!”
It tries to hop away. It bumps—bonk—into a popcorn bucket. Popcorn flies like snow.
Emery giggles. The Adventurer laughs, too.
They follow the Toy into the Amusement Park.
First is the Merry-Go-Round. Horses go up. Horses go down.
The Toy hides under a painted horse.
Emery slides close. “It’s okay,” she whispers. “Soft hands.”
The Toy shakes. “No! I’m not broken!”
Next is the Ferris wheel. Big. Round.
The Adventurer points. “Maybe we find something to fix the key.”
Emery nods. “Find lost item,” she says, very proud of the big words.
They look on the ground. They look under a bench.
Then Emery sees it: a tiny silver screw, sparkling like a fish scale.
“Here!” says Emery.
But the Toy snatches it. “Mine!”
It scuttles toward a drain.
“Stop!” says the Adventurer.
Emery feels scared. Just a little.
She takes a slow breath. In. Out.
Then she sings a small mermaid hum. Hmm-hmm-hmm.
The sound is gentle, like waves.
The Toy pauses.
Its eyes look watery.
“I don’t want to be thrown away,” it squeaks.
Emery’s heart goes warm. “We keep you,” she says. “We fix you.”
The Adventurer kneels. “May I?”
The Toy nods, tiny.
They sit by a cotton-candy cart. Sweet pink clouds spin.
The Adventurer holds the Toy still.
Emery uses her smooth shell comb. She is careful. Very careful.
She straightens the bent key. The Adventurer puts in the silver screw.
Click.
The Toy winds up.
Whirr.
It stands tall.
It does a silly dance: tap-tap, wiggle-wiggle.
Emery claps. “Yay!”
The Toy looks shy now. “Thank you,” it says.
It reaches into its little pouch.
It gives Emery a prize: a pearl bracelet with rainbow beads.
A real treasure.
The Amusement Park lights glow brighter.
The Adventurer says, “Teamwork.”
Emery whispers, “Kindness.”
They wave goodbye.
Emery swishes her tail.
Her new bracelet goes sparkle-sparkle all the way home.
And the Toy? It dances on the bench, happy, safe, and not alone.
