Sir Nathaniel was a little Superhero with a bright blue cape. His boots went tap, tap, tap. His silver shield went shine, shine, shine. He lived near the Enchanted Commons, where soft grass tickled toes and round flowers sang, “Hello, hello!”
Every morning, Sir Nathaniel helped someone. He lifted a tiny cart for the mice. He reached apples for the hedgehogs. He gave warm hugs when little ducklings felt sad. Sir Nathaniel was brave, but he was gentle too.
One bright day, something strange happened.
The red flowers turned gray.
The yellow sunflowers turned gray.
The rainbow fountain went drip, drip, drip... gray water.
“Oh dear,” said Sir Nathaniel.
From behind a striped mushroom came Potion Maker. Potion Maker wore a green apron with big pockets. Clink, clink, clink! Little bottles bounced in the pockets. Potion Maker could make sleepy tea, bouncy bubble soap, and soup that smelled like carrots.
“The colors are hiding,” said Potion Maker. “A Living Shadow is near.”
Just then, a dark wiggly shape slid over the grass.
Swish.
It was Living Shadow.
Living Shadow had no feet, but it could zoom very fast. It had two small, shiny eyes. It wrapped around a pink flower.
“Mine,” whispered Living Shadow.
Sir Nathaniel held up his shield. “Please do not take the colors.”
Living Shadow made itself big. Very big. It covered a bench, a tree stump, and one surprised snail.
The snail said, “Oh!”
Sir Nathaniel felt a tiny wobble in his tummy. The shadow looked scary. But he took one slow breath. In... and out.
“I can be brave slowly,” he said.
Potion Maker nodded. “That is a very good kind of brave.”
Potion Maker opened a blue bottle. “We need three happy things for a Color-Back Potion. A golden leaf. A giggle berry. And one kind word.”
“Let’s go!” said Sir Nathaniel.
Tap, tap, tap went his boots.
First, they went to the old oak tree. A golden leaf was stuck high in a branch.
Sir Nathaniel could jump high. Boing! But he did not grab the leaf. A baby bird was resting beside it.
“Sleep well, little bird,” Sir Nathaniel whispered.
The baby bird opened one eye. It chirped, “Thank you.”
A warm breeze blew. Down floated the golden leaf. Plop! Right into Potion Maker’s bottle.
“One happy thing!” cheered Potion Maker.
Next, they crossed the Commons to the berry bushes. A round giggle berry hid under a leaf.
Living Shadow slid behind them. Swish, swish.
“I want it,” it whispered.
Sir Nathaniel did not run away. He stood tall, but his voice stayed soft. “You may look with us. But we do not grab.”
Living Shadow paused.
Under the leaf, a tiny bunny was trying to pull the berry free. Tug, tug, tug.
Sir Nathaniel helped with one finger. Potion Maker helped with a wooden spoon. Living Shadow gave one small push.
Pop!
The berry came loose. It bounced on the bunny’s nose.
Boop!
The bunny giggled. Sir Nathaniel giggled. Potion Maker giggled. Even Living Shadow made a funny sound.
“Hmm-heh,” it said.
The giggle berry rolled into the bottle.
“Two happy things!” said Potion Maker.
Now they needed one kind word. But the Commons was quiet. The birds felt gray. The flowers felt gray. Everyone was worried about Living Shadow.
Sir Nathaniel looked at the wiggly dark shape. Living Shadow looked down. It became small. Very small.
“I took colors,” it whispered. “I was cold. I wanted something bright close to me.”
Sir Nathaniel understood. Sometimes a sad feeling could make someone do a wrong thing.
He knelt beside Living Shadow. “You do not have to be alone,” he said. “You can sit with us in the sunshine.”
Living Shadow’s shiny eyes blinked.
“That is kind,” it said.
A little golden sparkle floated from Sir Nathaniel’s words into Potion Maker’s bottle.
Clink! The bottle swirled red, yellow, blue, and green.
Potion Maker shook it carefully. “Color-Back Potion!”
Sir Nathaniel lifted his shield. Potion Maker poured one bright drop onto it.
Shine, shine, shine!
A rainbow beam flew across the Enchanted Commons. It touched the gray flowers. Red came back. Pink came back. Yellow came back. The rainbow fountain danced again.
Splash! Splash! Splash!
Living Shadow did not run away. It sat near the fountain. The rainbow light made a little purple edge around it.
“Oh,” said Living Shadow. “I am still a shadow. But now I have a purple sparkle.”
“You look wonderful,” said Sir Nathaniel.
The animals clapped their paws, wings, and tiny hooves. Potion Maker opened the biggest pocket in the green apron.
Inside was a treasure box.
“For our kind Superhero,” said Potion Maker.
Sir Nathaniel opened it. Inside was a new cape clasp shaped like a rainbow star, and three shiny hero coins that said: BRAVE, KIND, HELPING.
Sir Nathaniel put on the rainbow star clasp. His blue cape fluttered high.
“Tap, tap, tap!” went his boots.
Living Shadow made a small happy swish.
And at the Enchanted Commons, Sir Nathaniel learned that a brave hero can use a strong shield, a gentle voice, and a kind heart.
