Calani and the Stuck Toy

Kids stories

At School, brave little Calani helps a noisy toy with a stuck wheel. With Doll and Flower, she finds the missing crayons and earns a shining gold star.
Calani and the Stuck Toy

The Toddler Calani was a little girl with bright boots and a brave, soft heart. Every morning, she walked into School holding her tiny blue bag.

“Hello, chairs!” Calani said.
“Hello, books!”
“Hello, sunny window!”

On the windowsill lived Flower. Flower had yellow petals and a green, wiggly stem. When Calani sang, Flower swayed. “Good morning, Calani,” whispered Flower. “You make my leaves happy.”

In Calani’s bag sat Doll. Doll wore a red dress, one white sock, and a smile sewn with blue thread. Doll was small, but she was very kind. “Today will be a good day,” Doll said.

Then—clack, clack, clack!
A big Toy rolled across the classroom floor.

Toy was a shiny tin truck with square eyes and a loud little horn. “Honk! Mine!” said Toy. Its wheels bumped the blocks. Its scoop pushed the crayons. Red crayon went under the table. Green crayon went behind the book box. Blue crayon rolled near the door.

“Oh no,” said Calani.

Toy saw the beautiful class picture on the wall. It showed a rainbow, a moon, and a field of happy flowers. “Pretty colors!” Toy honked. “I want them!”

Clack, clack, clack! Toy rolled to the picture. Its scoop went up.

Flower drooped. “Please do not take our colors,” Flower said in a tiny voice.

Calani felt a little scared. Toy was big. Its horn was loud. But Calani took one deep breath.

“In,” said Calani.
“Out,” said Doll.

Calani held Doll’s hand. “Toy,” she said, “stop, please.”

“Honk! I cannot stop!” Toy said. “My wheel is stuck. I roll and roll. I bump and push. I do not like it!”

Calani looked closely. Under Toy’s round wheel was a long yellow ribbon. It had wrapped around the wheel many, many times.

“Toy is not being mean,” Calani whispered. “Toy needs help.”

Flower lifted her petals. “I can help! My long leaf can tickle the ribbon.”

Doll nodded. “And I can hold the little wheel still.”

Calani smiled. “We can do it together.”

First, Calani put three soft blocks in front of Toy. Bump! Toy touched the blocks and stopped safely.

“Thank you,” said Toy, very quietly.

Next, Doll leaned against the wheel. “Hold, hold, hold,” Doll said.

Flower stretched one long leaf down from the windowsill. “Tickle, tickle!” Flower giggled. The yellow ribbon peeked out.

Calani pinched the ribbon with her small fingers. Pull, pull, pull.

The ribbon would not come free.

Calani did not cry. She did not run away. She tried again.

“Pull together!” she said.

Doll held. Flower tickled. Calani pulled.

Pop!

The yellow ribbon came free.

Toy’s wheel turned once. Then it stopped. No clack. No bump. No loud horn.

Toy blinked its square eyes. “I am still,” it said.

“Yes,” said Calani. “You are still.”

Toy made the smallest sound: “Beep.”

Then Toy opened its little scoop. Inside were all the missing crayons! Red, green, blue, purple, orange, and a tiny gold one.

“I gathered them when I was rolling,” Toy said. “I thought I wanted the colors. But I think the colors belong to everyone.”

“That is right,” said Flower.

Toy gave every crayon back. Calani put the gold crayon in the middle of the table.

“Let us make a new picture,” she said.

Doll drew a red heart. Flower helped with green leaf shapes. Toy pressed blue paint with its clean, round wheel. Calani drew a huge yellow sun.

The picture had a rainbow, a moon, a field of flowers, a red-dress doll, and a shiny tin truck. At the top, Calani made a gold star.

“Look!” said Doll. “A team picture!”

Teacher came in and clapped. “What a wonderful picture! And what careful helpers!”

She gave Calani a small treasure box. Inside was a bright gold sticker shaped like a star.

“For brave helping hands,” Teacher said.

Calani put the sticker on her blue bag. Doll got a tiny silver sticker. Flower got a drop of fresh water. Toy got a new yellow ribbon, tied in a loose bow where it could not catch its wheel.

“Honk,” said Toy, softly. “Friends?”

“Friends,” said Calani.

At home time, Calani waved to the classroom. “Bye, Flower! Bye, Doll! Bye, Toy!”

Flower swayed. Doll smiled. Toy gave one gentle beep.

And on Calani’s blue bag, the gold star shone all the way home.
