Mateo the mysterious was a little magician. He lived high up in a Celestial Observatory. The roof was round. The windows were big. The stars looked close, like tiny lamps.
Mateo wore a soft cape. It was too long. He stepped on it. “Oops,” said Mateo.
A gentle friend floated in. Moon Child glowed like milk and silver. Moon Child had big curious eyes.
“Hello, Mateo,” said Moon Child.
“Hello,” said Mateo. “I have a job. A star is missing.”
Moon Child blinked. “A missing star? Where did it go?”
Mateo held up a small telescope. “Let’s look.”
They looked. The sky had one dark dot. Like a little hole.
Mateo felt a tiny worry in his tummy. But he was brave. He patted his pockets. “I will find it.”
Moon Child nodded. “I will help. We go together.”
They tip-toed across the observatory floor. Click, clack, click. Mateo’s shoes made small sounds.
Then—GRRR.
Behind a tall bookcase, a Monster peeked out. It was big. It was fuzzy. It had a very loud belly.
Moon Child hid a little behind Mateo.
Mateo swallowed. “Hello, Monster.”
The Monster sniffed. “I smell… star.”
Mateo held his hands up. “No scare. We just want the missing star back.”
The Monster’s eyes looked sad. “I did not mean to take it. It fell. It was cold. I hugged it.”
Mateo looked down. On the floor, under the Monster’s arm, was a tiny star. It was dim. It was squished like a cookie.
Moon Child whispered, “Poor star.”
Mateo’s voice was soft. “Monster, can you show us?”
The Monster slowly opened its arms. The little star gave a small “ting.”
Mateo took out his wand. It was short and smooth. “I know a simple fix,” he said.
He made a circle in the air. “Twinkle, wiggle, glow!”
Nothing.
Mateo blinked. “Hmm.” He tried again. “Twinkle, wiggle, glow!”
Still nothing.
Mateo felt hot in his cheeks. “My magic is shy,” he said.
Moon Child floated closer. “We can help your magic.”
“How?” asked Mateo.
“Breathe,” said Moon Child. “Slow.”
Mateo breathed in. Mateo breathed out.
The Monster copied. “Huuu… haaa,” it breathed.
Mateo smiled. “Good breathing, Monster.”
Now Mateo tapped the star very gently. “Wake up, little star.”
Moon Child sang a tiny hum. “Hmm-hmm-hmm.”
The Monster made a soft purr. “Rrrr,” not scary, just warm.
The star started to shine. First a dot. Then a spark. Then a bright, happy light.
“Ting-ting!” said the star.
Mateo laughed. “It worked! Teamwork magic!”
Moon Child clapped. “You did it, Mateo the mysterious!”
The Monster’s shoulders dropped. “Am I in trouble?”
Mateo shook his head. “No. You were lonely. Next time, ask.”
The Monster nodded. “I can ask.”
Mateo opened a small roof door. Cool night air whooshed in. Together they lifted the star on a velvet pillow.
Mateo raised his wand. “Up, up, star.”
This time the wand glowed. Mateo’s magic was not shy anymore.
The star floated up into the sky. It slid into the dark dot. The sky looked whole again.
The observatory lights twinkled. A hidden drawer popped open—click!
Inside was a reward: a tiny chest of star stickers, shiny and safe.
“For you,” said Moon Child.
Mateo gave the Monster one sticker too. “For being gentle,” he said.
The Monster smiled a big smile. “I will be a helper Monster.”
Mateo put a sticker on his cape. “Now I am Mateo the mysterious… and Mateo the twinkly.”
They watched the sky together. Calm. Bright. Happy.
